Overview

The Costa Mesa, CA office of Lewis Brisbois, a full-service AmLaw 100 firm, is actively seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer - Databases and Analytics who will report to the Director of Innovation and Application Deployment.

 

The Senior Systems Engineer – Databases and Analytics (SSE-D&A) will play a critical role in managing, maintaining, and optimizing the firm’s database systems to ensure high availability, security, and performance. This role supports critical legal and firm applications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and firm policies. The SSE-D&A will collaborate with IT and other departments to deliver reliable data solutions in a fast-paced legal environment.

Responsibilities

The following list of essential functions is not exhaustive and other duties may be assigned in addition to those listed. The items listed are considered daily functions associated with this position.

 

  • Database Management
    • Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server and other database platforms.
    • Design, implement, and optimize database schemas, tables, views, and stored procedures.
    • Monitor database performance and implement tuning strategies.
  • Application Integration
    • Support integrations with legal business systems such as Aderant Expert, iManage, Chrome River, and other practice management tools.
    • Develop and maintain data feeds between internal and external systems.
  • Security & Compliance
    • Implement and enforce database security policies, including user access controls and encryption.
    • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and firm-specific security standards.
  • Backup & Recovery
    • Develop and maintain robust backup and disaster recovery plans.
    • Perform regular testing of recovery procedures.
  • Reporting & Analytics
    • Develop and maintain SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) reports for operational and financial reporting.
    • Build and manage Power BI dashboards to support business intelligence initiatives.
    • Create custom queries and reports for attorneys, finance, and management teams.
  • Collaboration & Support
    • Work closely with IT teams, attorneys, and administrative staff to troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues.
    • Provide end-user support for database-driven applications.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools such as PowerShell, Power Automate or similar tools.
  • Hands-on experience with system performance tuning, security, and compliance.
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) and networking protocols
  • 5+ years of experience as a DBA, preferably in a professional services or law firm environment.
  • Expertise in Microsoft SQL Server; knowledge of Oracle or other RDBMS is a plus.
  • Proficiency in SSRS and Power BI for reporting and analytics.
  • Familiarity with legal and financial systems (e.g., Aderant Expert, iManage).
  • Strong understanding of data security, compliance, and privacy regulations.
  • Experience with cloud-based database solutions (Azure SQL, AWS RDS).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree: A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering is strongly preferred
  • 5+ Years: Proven professional experience in system engineering or IT roles, with a strong background in Microsoft technologies (Azure, Windows Server, Active Directory, SQL etc.). Preferably in a legal services environment
    • Experience designing and managing complex IT environments, including on-premises, cloud-based, and hybrid setups.

USD $115,000.00/Yr.
